What is Social Policy?

The Social Policy work of the Mothers’ Union comes out of our care for families worldwide. As we come alongside people in need we see how social problems affect them. We see the impact of local, national and international laws and policy decisions on people’s lives.

Internationally and nationally, the Mother’s Union has built a reputation for clear thinking based on valuable on the ground experience. So, we have a place at the United Nations on the Commission for Women and our national government asks for and values our opinion on proposed legislation and policy making, especially when it affects marriage and family life.

In Oxford diocese, we are only just beginning to engage with social issues. Many of our members were involved in the Make Poverty History campaign in 2005. Often when government consults us, there is very little time to respond. Some of our branches and a number of other groups have agreed to meet at short notice to consider issues and send their views to our Social Policy Contact We now have 19 of these 'Quick Response Groups' who enjoy meeting to discuss serious issues affecting families and children. Their thoughts are collated and sent to the central Social Policy unit for inclusion in Mothers’ Union response. In this way, we can make a real difference.

If you are interested in being involved in this work, please contact the office who will put you in touch with the Social Policy Contact in your area.
